How Food Rescue Is Making a Difference in Boston

In the first quarter of 2026, the collaboration between Food Rescue US – Boston and the Somerville Hispanic Association has shown that small actions can create a meaningful impact in the fight against food waste and food insecurity.

Results That Speak for Themselves

During this period, a team of just 3 volunteers collected 11 donations, rescuing a total of 1,852 pounds of food. These items, which might otherwise have gone to waste, were redistributed to support individuals and families in need within the community.

This effort reflects not only commitment but also efficiency: with limited resources, a measurable and meaningful impact was achieved.

Why It Matters

The issue of food waste is more serious than it may seem. In Massachusetts:

  • More than 1 million tons of food waste are generated each year
  • Approximately 34% of households face food insecurity
  • Food waste is the #1 item in landfills
  • Around 8% of greenhouse gas emissions come from decomposing food

These figures highlight a troubling paradox: while large amounts of food are wasted, many people struggle to access enough to eat.

A Solution with Multiple Benefits

Food recovery and donation efforts don’t just address hunger. They also help to:

  • Reduce landfill waste
  • Lower harmful emissions
  • Strengthen community resilience
  • Promote a more sustainable economy

In short, it’s an approach with social, environmental, and economic impact.

Partners Making Change Possible

This effort would not be possible without the support of committed donors such as:

  • Tatte Assembly Row
  • Tatte Central Bakery
  • Trader Joe’s (Brookline)

Their involvement shows how businesses can play a key role in building stronger, more supportive communities.

The Power of Collective Action

The results from this first quarter clearly demonstrate that change is possible when organizations, volunteers, and businesses work together. Every donation counts, every pound of food matters, and every effort adds up.

Food rescue is not just an initiative it’s an urgent need and a real opportunity to transform our communities.
